The AMA recently posted preliminary results from an unpublished study on the effect of reading non-medical material and physician burnout. Based on survey results, protection against burnout for those physicians who read for relaxation significantly increased when compared against other relaxation methods. Could prevention of burnout really be as simple as reading a book? Try implementing a book club with your residents and faculty….it’s inexpensive, convenient, requires no special skill and would be a great addition to your well-being resources. Not sure where to start? Reach out to your medical librarian or local public library for assistance.
